(Retired) Reverend

After my retirement as Rector of Barningham in 2009 my wife Christine and I came to live in Ripon. Christine who was a Reader and a member of the Ripon and Leeds Diocese Vocation team had worked with the Reverend Peter Clement who was director of vocation. Peter was Priest in Charge of Sharow so we found it good to worship at Sharow, where we were made very welcome and felt very much at home with a wonderful caring congregation.
Christine and I soon became members of the ministry team until she died of cancer in 2015 and her ashes are buried in the church cremation area. I have continued to be part of the ministry team, but since I was ordained priest in 1969 my work these days is somewhat limited. Much of my priestly ministry is at Holy Innocents, Copt Hewick. Often when taking services there, I enjoy working with our wonderful Reader; Ruth Grenfell. I enjoy worshipping at Sharow; with the congregation and working with the team. I think Sharow is a great parish with a fantastic team and feel privileged to be a member. |
My early working life was as a secretary and then in Human Resources, from London to Washington DC, Brussels and Teesside! Now 77 I went to uni in Leeds to read psychology at 49!! I had trained as a relationship counsellor with Relate and a bereavement counsellor with Cruse. I also worked for Citizens Advice for 10 years. Now retired, I'm always happy to offer a listening ear. After my graduation I studied at York St John for an MA in theology and trained as a Reader, now termed Licensed Lay Minister. I have loved the role, hoping to support any current priest. I also preach at the URC in Harrogate. I particularly value working with bereaved families and conducting funerals; it is a huge privilege to be with people who are coming to terms with loss. A great joy is working with Chris Cowper at Copt Hewick, both at services every Tuesday and at the monthly service. As mother of 4 and Granny of 8, family is a huge part of my life but I hope to continue to serve the congregation at St John's when needed . My other regular commitment is as a Chaplain at Ripon Cathedral every Thursday morning - full of interest. I love to sing and Simon and I sing with two choirs. I love to garden and I'm grateful to have a smaller garden these days, after 38 years at St John's House!

Hello from Juliet, Lay Minister at St John’s. I was invited here to explore my Vocation and I take responsibility for the Church Growth Portfolio, love welcoming and meeting new people, so do say Hello after the services.
I lead Morning Prayer, Cafe Church and Celtic Evening Worship. Bible study is a favourite which I lead most Fridays apart from Summer break. Then you find me planning our fabulous Children’s Holiday Club week, run by our wonderful volunteers assisted by our Young Leaders. I am also an Artist, and you will find various Colouring Calm prayerful artwork and pencil crayons around church for all ages to enjoy. We start all Junior Choir practices with a good drawing session to focus everyone after the school week. Once a quarter I hold Art & Spirituality Retreat Days, which are enriching, prayerful and contemplative, open to all. When not dreaming up exciting new ideas or services for church, I enjoy studying Theology, drawing, writing poetry, playing and listening to music, visiting beaches and family, baking, gardening and cuddling a cat when I get chance!😇 |
I’ve been worshipping at Sharow for about 18 years now and my role has changed over the years! Having worked with children with additional needs my whole career I started helping at Sunday school and now lead on Children’s Ministry. This last year I have completed the Lay Worship Leaders course and so will be leading more cafe church and family services, ensuring what we do is accessible to everyone of any age or ability.
If I’m not in work or church you’ll probably find me out walking with Martha the cocker spaniel, who presented JAM club online with me every Sunday in lockdown |
