DBS Verifier and Administrator (Volunteer Role)

27/1/2026

Picture
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented volunteer to assist with the administration of DBS checks within our church.

All volunteers and those holding official roles are required to complete a DBS check every three years. This role supports our safeguarding processes by helping to ensure these checks are completed accurately and efficiently.

Full training and ongoing support will be provided, and the system we use through ThirtyOne:Eight is clear, secure, and straightforward to follow.

This is an essential but manageable role, requiring only a small and flexible time commitment. It involves:
    •    Following an online process with care and attention
    •    Verifying identity documents in person
    •    Maintaining confidentiality and good record-keeping
    •    Liaising with the Safeguarding Officer when needed

Confidence in using basic IT systems is helpful, as is a friendly and organised approach when meeting with volunteers and church members.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working carefully behind the scenes and wants to make a meaningful contribution to the safety and wellbeing of our church community.

If you are interested in serving in this important ministry, please speak to the Safeguarding Officer -

November News from Copt Hewick

29/10/2025

At the beginning of October we gathered in the village hall to celebrate the harvest What a harvest this year has been, bountiful, particularly with fruit and berries, inspite of the very dry and hot weather. (for some of us the shade of the trees was a blessed relief)
So we had much to celebrate in our service.
We were joined by our lovely band of musicians, who were there to accompany our harvest hymns.
The produce not sold was taken to Ripon Food Bank along with over £200 raised in donations.
As always it was a very joyful service of thanksgiving

The little band of musicians are hopefully going to join us for carol singing in December. Watch out for the date in the next news letter

The village Christmas Fair is fast approaching on Saturday the 29th November from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Lots of interesting things to see.

Church will have its usual bric a brac stall if anyone has any items they are happy to donate, Judith and Lesley will be delighted to ke them of your hands!

Welcome Service for Reverend David Paton-Williams

20/10/2025

The service of Licensing by the Bishop of Ripon of
The Revd David Paton-Williams

as Associate Priest (House for Duty) within the Ripon Cathedral benefice, responsible for the parish of
Sharow with Copt Hewick and Marton-le-Moor.

Tuesday 14th October 2025 7:30pm

Genesis 28: 10-17
Luke 24: 13-35

A joyous welcome service was had, with a packed church. Local clergy filled the choir stalls in the Sanctuary. The congregation was made from local and regular worshipers, representatives of local community groups and councils and also those who had travelled from afar to support David and his wife Jenny.
We are so very grateful for Dean John and Ripon Cathedral for creating such a very special service and for their incredible support in the interregnum. Also, our thanks to Bishop Anna for this blessed and very special service.

We extend the warmest of welcomes to our new priest, Revd David, and his wife Jenny. We pray that their ministry among us will be richly blessed:

Gracious Lord,
pour out your Spirit upon David and Jenny;
grant them wisdom, courage, and joy in their service,
and knit us together in love as one body in Christ.
Amen.

Welcome to June

31/5/2025

As we step into the month of June there is a real sense of spring turning into summer- this year my flipflops are out very early! So as always I have bought a car boot full of little plants, full of misplaced confidence in my gardening ability, but inspired by the beauty and optimism of the natural world around me.  At the moment the hawthorn is looking particularly stunning laden with blossom- the new growth and the warmer days promises a time of renewal.

Just as nature reaches peak growing season, the season of Pentecost offers us its own renewal and promise of growth.   Pentecost is the great feast of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, reminding us that God’s presence isn’t just for Sundays, feast days or to be found in church, it’s the fire that ignites hearts, a wind that stirs life into dry bones and a warmth that makes things new.   On that first Pentecost the disciples, once fearful and uncertain, were transformed by the Spirit’s power.  Their courage swelled and their lives became a living testament to God’s love.

So in June we are also invited to embrace transformation, just like my tiny plants who stretch to the sun to receive life, we are called to lean towards the Spirit. This is a season of growth for us all- Pentecost asks us to stir into life, embrace the gifts and talents we have been given and consider how our lives can also become that living testament to God’s love.

We’ll see some of the talents in our community at the forthcoming Midsummer Piano, Pimms and Poetry Afternoon tea- everyone is welcome on 21st June at 2pm- [email protected]. This promises to be a very special event- what a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon!   Services in June are as usual, with, we hope, something for everybody throughout the month- hope to see you all soon.

“Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people.” — Ephesians 6:7

In May, we said a heartfelt thank you and farewell to our beloved Rosemary, who is has stepped down as Churchwarden, we are now looking for someone to take up the role. Could it be you? It’s a rewarding way to contribute to the life of St John’s, grow in your faith, and be part of a truly supportive and joyful team. No one walks this path alone — we’re in it together.

At our Annual Parochial Church Council Meeting we also said farewell to Ruth who has retired from the council after many years and Nicky who is handing over the reigns as Safeguarding Officer. We’re welcoming new members to our Parochial Church Council (PCC) — ideal for those who care deeply about the future of our church and want to be part of shaping it. This might be the moment to step forward and say, “Yes, I’m in!”

We're very excited to welcome Jane to the Parochial Church Council. Sharon has joined Jean to serve on the Deanery Synod. Thank you so very much to both Jane and Sharon, we are so excited to have your help in taking St John’s forward.

While we continue praying for the appointment of a new priest, we’re incredibly thankful for the dedication and warmth of our current ministry team — Reader Ruth, Ordinand Juliet, Lay Worship Minister Carol-Ann, visiting clergy, and of course Rev’d Chris from The Holy Innocents. If you’d like a chat, Juliet is available in church on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, or you can contact her by email at [email protected]. You’ll also find Tony in church every Monday at 9:30am, always happy to talk or answer questions.

We encourage everyone to take part in this season of energy, hope, and service — let’s move forward together in faith, with full hearts and open hands.

You can also support St John’s with zero fuss by using Easy Fundraising when you shop online:

Here’s to a month of fresh beginnings, shared purpose, and joyful action!

Brilliant Launch for Sharow Bells Restoration

6th to 12th April saw a brilliant launch for the next phase of Sharow Bells Restoration. Unfortunately we had to postpone Wood’s Quarter Peal attempt, but the week unfolded with bellringers meeting church users and explaining the proposed developments. A display in church and a PowerPoint presentation documented what has been achieved so far and outlines what next. Due to the makeup of the metal and the shape of the bells, they can’t be retuned and will be taken away and recast before being put back lower in the tower. This will result in an improved tone quality of the ringing and a better experience for the bellringers. On Monday 7th Simon Burren came to St John’s to explain the proposed support from the Yorkshire Association of Change Ringers. Simon has been involved in a project in Middleham and offered his encouragement for the proposed work at St John’s. Wednesday 9th was an Open Morning in the ringing chamber to experience “Silent Ringing”. The bells are silenced using old cycle inner tubes and the sound of the bells is relayed by a computer. It was brilliant to welcome members of Magdalene Fellowship and Wonderful Wednesdays to try out the bells and see how it all works. On Saturday 12th Bridget was joined by Joanna, Alan and Tracey for a fundraising Wild Swim in the Ure. A lovely sunny day followed by cake, made the dip very enjoyable. The next Wild Swim is on Friday 9th May- please see attached poster. More details to follow. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to Sharow Bells Restoration. During Launch Week the Gudgeon family said they would also like to fund a bell and Ginny Macay is donating the cost of a headstock. If you’d like to contribute towards the cost of project please get in touch or make a donation to https:/justgiving.com/campaign/appealforapeal Catch up with all that is going on in the bell tower on Facebook Sharow Bells Restoration.

May Floral Update

27/4/2025

After the absence of flowers in church during Lent it was  a pleasure to decorate the church for Easter. Margaret Bushell left two arrangements for me to include as she was away on holiday when the flowers were arranged on Easter Saturday.
If anyone is interested in either joining the flower group (which currently consists of myself and Margaret) please do have a chat with me. You don't have to be a 'flower arranger', but if you're nervous about how to arrange or what to do I am only too happy to talk you through it and show you the ropes (basically the easy steps to follow to do the candle stick arrangement). Please make yourself known.

Confirmation Celebration

Today at St John’s Church in North Yorkshire, we witnessed a moving celebration of faith as four wonderful souls—Caroline, Jo, Abby, and young Gregory—stepped forward in confirmation. The ceremony, graced by the presence of our esteemed Bishop Anna, was one of divine joy and promise, affirming the sacred calling that awaits each confirmed believer.

Our wonderful Bishop Anna led the service with a resplendent blend of tradition and heartfelt modernity

Psalm 118:24:
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

The confirmation is not merely a rite of passage but a luminous testament to a lifelong walk with Christ—a journey that transforms hearts and kindles the divine spark within. Each candidate, with their unique stories and radiant spirits, has embraced this commitment, stepping boldly into a future illuminated by faith and guided by the Holy Spirit.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our wonderful ordinand Juliet, whose gentle wisdom and patient guidance in the weeks leading up to the ceremony have been nothing short of inspirational. Her nurturing spirit and dedication have prepared these candidates not just for this day, but for a lifetime of faithful service.

As we reflect on today’s confirmation, our hearts overflow with hope and gratitude. We stand together as a community bound by love, ready to support these newly confirmed members in their spiritual journey. May they always feel the embrace of our congregation, the guidance of our lay and visiting clergy, and the radiant warmth of God’s light.
