We dearly hope you will join us in our services this May. Easter continues gloriously, humbly and fearfully and we reach Ascension Day on May 29th. Everything is at St John’s,Sharow, HG45BJ, unless otherwise stated. “*HI” indicates the location at The Holy Innocents, Copt Hewick, HG45B Our churches are continuously adapting to need. If a schedule is altered, there will be a note on our Facebook Page. We will also endeavour to alter the website diary (however this is not always possible).
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.” — 1 Peter 4:10
As you will have gathered, our dear Rosemary is retiring— so we’re on the lookout for a new Churchwarden to be elected at our Annual Parish Meeting on 18th May! This is a fantastic opportunity to serve, grow, and be a joyful part of something truly special at St John’s. And don’t worry — you won’t be doing it alone! You’ll be surrounded by a supportive, friendly team every step of the way. There are also openings on our Parochial Church Council (PCC) — perfect if you’re passionate about helping shape the future of our church family. Could this be your time to step in and step up? As we prayerfully wait for a new priest, we give thanks for our wonderful ministry team: Reader Ruth, Ordinand Juliet, Lay Worship Minister Carol-Ann, visiting clergy, and of course Rev’d Chris at The Holy Innocents. Juliet is available for a chat in church on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, or you can email her at [email protected]. You’ll also find Tony at church every Monday at 9:30am if you’d like to talk or ask questions. Let’s come together — with prayer, action, and joy — to keep the light of St John’s shining brightly! And here’s an easy win: support St John’s while you shop online through Easy Fundraising: https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/sjcs/ Let’s make this a season of growth, joy, and unity — together! PLEASE do complete and return your electoral roll forms if you worship with us. We need to count up by early May ! Summer Holiday Club - mornings of Mon-Fri 11th-15th August - children under 5 to be accompanied. To volunteer or to book your child in please contact Juliet. Choir - Is now to be updated by the Choir WhatsApp group when it is running. Email Juliet to get involved ! 6th to 12th April saw a brilliant launch for the next phase of Sharow Bells Restoration. Unfortunately we had to postpone Wood’s Quarter Peal attempt, but the week unfolded with bellringers meeting church users and explaining the proposed developments. A display in church and a PowerPoint presentation documented what has been achieved so far and outlines what next. Due to the makeup of the metal and the shape of the bells, they can’t be retuned and will be taken away and recast before being put back lower in the tower. This will result in an improved tone quality of the ringing and a better experience for the bellringers. On Monday 7th Simon Burren came to St John’s to explain the proposed support from the Yorkshire Association of Change Ringers. Simon has been involved in a project in Middleham and offered his encouragement for the proposed work at St John’s. Wednesday 9th was an Open Morning in the ringing chamber to experience “Silent Ringing”. The bells are silenced using old cycle inner tubes and the sound of the bells is relayed by a computer. It was brilliant to welcome members of Magdalene Fellowship and Wonderful Wednesdays to try out the bells and see how it all works. On Saturday 12th Bridget was joined by Joanna, Alan and Tracey for a fundraising Wild Swim in the Ure. A lovely sunny day followed by cake, made the dip very enjoyable. The next Wild Swim is on Friday 9th May- please see attached poster. More details to follow. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to Sharow Bells Restoration. During Launch Week the Gudgeon family said they would also like to fund a bell and Ginny Macay is donating the cost of a headstock. If you’d like to contribute towards the cost of project please get in touch or make a donation to https:/justgiving.com/campaign/appealforapeal Catch up with all that is going on in the bell tower on Facebook Sharow Bells Restoration.
Bridget Taylor-Connor Tower Correspondent 07752981346 After the absence of flowers in church during Lent it was a pleasure to decorate the church for Easter. Margaret Bushell left two arrangements for me to include as she was away on holiday when the flowers were arranged on Easter Saturday.
If anyone is interested in either joining the flower group (which currently consists of myself and Margaret) please do have a chat with me. You don't have to be a 'flower arranger', but if you're nervous about how to arrange or what to do I am only too happy to talk you through it and show you the ropes (basically the easy steps to follow to do the candle stick arrangement). Please make yourself known. email steden14@btinternet .com or text 07534123084-Denise Here we have two photos of the Meadow Saxifrage Saxifraga granulata which grows only on one grave in the oldest part of St. John’s! The photos were taken in 2024.
It flowers from late April into May and is an indicator species for old meadow/grassland – a hint as to what was present before the churchyard was consecrated! -Jill For my own sake I never imagined that I would be ringing bells again after 45 years. I learned when I was about 12, standing on a box in St Mary’s, Dunsfold, Surrey, where I grew up. I met Charles on a walk in Ripon and he encouraged me to return to, ‘Have another go!’. This I did on 9th October 2023 and I have never looked back.
It has provided the most remarkable, life changing experience because I moved churches and ring now with my wife. Ringing bells gives us physical exercise, tests our mental agility and yet also contributes to our spiritual worship. Combined with an environment of wonderful friendship this is a cocktail of wellbeing that has exceeded all my expectations! If anyone reading this would just like to come and see what the experience can provide for them you would be SO welcome. It is always a privilege to show visitors our tower.
