History

Worship began in a school-room in Copt Hewick during the incumbency of the Reverend E.Gray, Vicar of Sharow 1852-85. THE FOUNDATION STONE wis laid on 20 April, 1875, and the Church dedicated on 2 August that year by the Bishop of Ripon, who assigned its Title to the Holy Innocents in 1887, the Jubilee Year of the Queen, to mark which the founder, J.S, HURST, Esq, of Copt Hewick hall, extended the nave and added the octagonal vestry. Beneath a new and better timber roof for the sanctuary a jewelled cross and candlesticks were provided for she altar, lts frontals of white and gold silk brought by Mr. Hurst from Constantinople. His benefactions are commemorated in the East window, by Stummers of York. New oak altor rails and a reading desk designed and made by John Thorpe of Ripon were dedicated in 1960, and new windows made
of antique glass by N.J. Allen of York throughout the Church, in 1961.
